  Paulo Villamil Álvarez

  Biography

  Electrical Engineering graduate from the University of León, with earlier technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering in Gijón and a European Welding Engineer qualification. He brings 45 years in the Spanish electricity sector (1981–2026), all of it at Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico and EDP España, covering every level of energy asset operation: maintenance technician, control room operator and shift supervisor (1981–2007); Head of Operation and Maintenance for EDP's cogeneration fleet (2007–2018), responsible for 22 plants, 280 MW and over 120 professionals; Technical Engineering Manager (2018–2020); and Director of the Acceleration Office at EDP España (2020–2026), leading strategic innovation projects in battery storage, renewable hydrogen, coal-to-gas conversion and photovoltaic self-consumption. Since the late 1990s he has promoted and led industrial research and experimental development projects — many with the University of Oviedo — in process digitalisation, predictive maintenance, advanced diagnostics of large electrical machines, renewable integration and energy storage. He left EDP in 2026 to lead the creation of Banatria, bringing operational knowledge of the assets the RICE coordinates, leadership of large teams, and more than 25 years in R&D and energy business development.

  Pablo García Fernández

  Biography

  Full Professor at the University of Oviedo in the Department of Systems Engineering and Automation, and co-founder of the university spin-off Enfasys Ingeniería S.L. (2019). Author of over 50 international publications and more than 100 international conference papers. He has received IEEE awards for both best papers and best presentations. Principal investigator on more than 50 national, European, and industry-funded research projects. He holds 4 six-year research accreditations (sexenios) and 1 knowledge transfer accreditation granted by CNEAI. His research and technology transfer focus is on the control and management of distributed energy resources connected to the grid, particularly Li-ion battery energy storage systems.

  José Manuel Cano Rodríguez

  Biography

  Full Professor at the University of Oviedo in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Author of more than 40 publications in top-tier journals and over 100 conference contributions. He has participated as a researcher in more than 20 competitive research projects (as PI on 10) and has been involved in over 80 technology transfer contracts. He is the author of 5 patents/utility models. Between 2012 and 2014, he was a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). He holds 4 six-year research accreditations and 1 knowledge transfer accreditation granted by CNEAI. He currently serves as Area Manager for Energy and Transport at the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI). His primary research line focuses on the management and operation of electrical distribution networks.

  Igor Cantero Uribe-Echeberría

  Biography

  Holds a Ph.D. in Electrochemistry from the University of the Basque Country (1999). He is currently General Manager of BATIQ, a battery technology consultancy he co-founded in 2023. Previously, he spent 23 years as R&D Director at CEGASA, a leading battery manufacturer, where he led the development of zinc-air, lithium-ion, and fuel cell technologies. Over 30 years he has authored 49 scientific papers, holds 5 patents, and has delivered more than 50 presentations. He has led over 100 research projects and taught more than 25 courses and seminars. He also serves as Technical Director of AEPIBAL, the Spanish Energy Storage Association.
